The best romantic movies available on Netflix now

Set It Up

One of the best Netflix original romantic comedies with Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell starring as overworked assistants Harper and Charlie. Harper is an assistant to Kirsten (Lucy Liu) the woman behind a sports media empire. Charlie works for finance expert Rick (Taye Diggs). Harper and Charlie realize that their respective workloads might get a bit lighter if their bosses were more focused on their love life and less focused on work. So, they…set them up.

Outside In

Outside In is a teacher-student romance with a mature, well-handled exploration of love and what it means to love someone for themselves as opposed to what they do for us. Jay Duplas stars as Chris, a man who was wrongly imprisoned at the age of 18 and who is released at 38. When Chris gets out of jail, he immediately meets up with his old high school teacher, Carol (Edie Falco), who was his penpal when he was in prison.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Based on a book by the same title The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an excellent, watchable classical romance set in 1946. Lily James stars as British writer Juliet Ashton. Juliet begins exchanging letters with residents of the islands of Guernsey, which was under German occupation in WWII (so like two years before the movie starts). While there she meets the dashing Dawsey Adams (Michael Huisman) and their romantic relationship begins to blossom.

Silver Linings Playbook

A classic love tale with Bradley Cooper starring as Pat Solitano Jr., a young man with bipolar disorder living with his parents after being released from a psychiatric hospital who is determined to win back his ex-wife and enlists the help of young widow Tiffany Maxwell (the Oscar winner for the part Jennifer Lawrence). The two become closer as they train for an upcoming dance competition and share their respective damages with one another.

Great romantic comedies streaming now on Hulu

What Men Want

A female take on Nancy Meyers’ What Women Want starring Taraji P. Henson as Ali, a professional woman consistently dismissed by her male colleagues. All until an accident involving a head injury which gives her the ability to read men's thoughts.

50 First Dates

An amusing rom-com with Adam Sandler starring as a laid-back womanizer who falls in love with a woman with short-term memory loss, played by Drew Barrymore. The situation in which he has to find imaginative ways of winning her over again every day makes a great premise for a funny and entertaining movie.

The Princess Bride

A classic love story based on William Goldman's fantasy novel of the same title showing the everlasting love of Westley (Cary Elwes) and Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) in this epic tale of greed, revenge, and marriage.

You've Got Mail

An absolute classic and iconic Nora Ephron’s romantic comedy with two people who own competing bookstores--one tiny (Meg Ryan) and one huge (Tom Hanks)--dislike each other intensely. However, they become anonymous correspondents via e-mail and fall in love through their written exchanges. They remain unaware that the person who they're attracted to online is the same person they snub daily in the business world.

Heart-warming rom-coms for streaming on HBO Max this February

When Harry Met Sally

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this classic, feel-good romantic comedy about two University of Chicago grads who meet on a drive to New York City together. Though the pair debate about whether a man and a woman can ever be "just friends" upon their meeting, they're forced to confront this question many times as they bump into one another over a 12-year period.

Crazy Rich Asians

2018 revitalization of the rom-com genre based on the best-selling book of the same name by Kevin Kwan. The story follows Chinese-American professor Rachel (Constance Wu), who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding), for a wedding only to discover that his family is one of the wealthiest in the country. Rachel is also forced to confront Nick's traditional mother who believes she is not good enough to marry her son.

Two Weeks Notice

A good, old 2000s romantic comedy in which opposites don't just attract - they hilariously feud and collide when Sandra Bullock plays an activist lawyer who reconsiders leaving her job after her indecisive but charming boss (Hugh Grant) takes a liking to the Harvard graduate set to replace her.

Emma (2020)

A fresh and funny adaptation of a classic Jane Austen’s story starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn and Bill Nighy. Being largely faithful to its source material, it is a glittering satire of social class and the pain of growing up in which Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along.

HBO Max premieres this February can be found here.
